There is no more relaxing start to any holiday than taking one of the many last minute cruises on offer to the Canary Islands. Boasting a sub-tropical climate, breathtaking natural scenery and beautiful beaches, the Canaries remain a popular destination for UK holidaymakers.
Comprising a total of seven volcanic islands, the most well-known of the group are Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma and Fuerteventura, with both Mount Teide Park in Tenerife and Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote showing stark evidence of past volcanic action.
Mount Teide in Tenerife stands 3,718 metres above sea level and last erupted in 1909. The view from the summit, which is accessible only by cable car and on foot, is truly spectacular, while Timanfaya Park in Lanzarote is over fifty square miles of black moonscape, with an underground temperature in some areas of 600˚C.
For animal lovers, Loro Parque in Tenerife, Palmitos Park in Maspalomas and the Tenerife Zoo Monkey Park have hundreds of different exotic birds and animals to delight all ages, while a day cruise around the islands gives the opportunity to view sea life in its natural habitat and the chance to swim with dolphins.
The tree-lined streets and elegant buildings of Santa Cruz, the capital city in the north of Tenerife, contrast with the fast-paced vibrant nightlife in Playa de las Americas on the south of the island, with its huge number of clubs and bars.
Water sports are very popular with surfing and scuba diving schools all around the Canary Islands offering lessons. The superb facilities at Costa Adeje and Amarilla Golf Courses are a must for serious golfers while, for serious sun worshippers, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote have beaches with smooth golden sand.
The Canary Islands has something for everyone, with the choices ranging from all-inclusive hotels to several late cruise deals departing from most UK ports.
