Edinburgh
Many people come to Edinburgh through the year, some come for a weekend, others for a couple of weeks, but how ever long you visit for, you’ll always find plenty to do and see here.
There is so much to see and do in this City that many visitors leave wishing they’d had longer to enjoy all that Edinburgh has to offer, but this is never really a problem as Edinburgh is a very welcoming place and everyone is welcome back again and again.
Edinburgh is a place where many festivals and other events take place. Virtually every month at least one event is going on here. From Film Festival to Fringe Festival, Storytelling Festival to Military Tattoo, check out when things take place before you book so that you can make the most of your visit here.
As well as yearly events, Edinburgh is home to quite a few static attractions as well. The biggest and best known is of course Edinburgh Castle sat on the Crag above the city. It’s an impressive sight, and well worth visiting as there’s plenty to see here, from the National War museum which is housed here, to the Scottish Stone of Destiny and the Honours of Scotland both of which are housed here in a permanent exhibition.
Holyrood Palace at the opposite end of the Royal Mile to the Castle, is the official residence of the reigning Scottish Monarch, and when she’s in Scotland the Queen will stay here. The rest of the year however, it is open to visitors, and is an interesting place to see.
Edinburgh Old and New Town’s are national heritage sites and home to over 4,500 listed buildings. Both have lots of interesting architecture, and the Edinburgh Vaults can be found here too. Built under the arches of the South Bridge back in the 1780’s, they were home to taverns, cobblers, and other small businesses, and many illicit goods are said to have been stored here including the bodies of those killed by Burke and Hare! The complex was closed somewhere between 1835 and 1875, and not rediscovered until the 1980’s. Today it’s a tourist attraction and is an excellent way of seeing some of Edinburgh from the past.
Princes Street is Edinburgh’s main shopping area, and this and the surrounding streets are where you’ll find all the best shopping venues. You’ll also find the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and the National Gallery of Scotland here as well.
Edinburgh is a very green city with many parks and open spaces, from small walled gardens between buildings to large parks such as the Princes Street Gardens. All make excellent places to take a picnic and relax while you watch a little of Edinburgh’s people going about their daily business.
